Solaris Assignment

In this group project we got to try Solaris in Houdini, which is Houdini’s new context for scene assembly. This workspace reminds me of the common way of setting up a scene in Houdini in SOPs. But where Solaris truly shines is the fact that the scene assembly is done in an efficient way in one HIP project and could either be rendered in that project or be exported to any other .usd compatible 3D program and the scene will look the same.

Our way of using Solaris was to create individual assets with the Component Builder in Solaris and save the assets as .usd files to later be referenced in a layout scene where the rendering was done.

An asset in our case could either be defined as a singular object or as an assembled prop, e.g. an island. This island could consist of many single objects such as trees, rocks, grass etc. but in the end combined to a bigger .usd file.

The benefit of this way of working is that it’s easier to assemble massive scenes that are very heavy for the computer.
